What are writing problems and dysgraphia?

Writing problems often involve a child having visual-perceptual problems, visual immaturities or difficulty with writing, spelling or pencil grip. Writing problems are not always caused by one issue but can have many and varied contributing factors. For example, some children may experience writing difficulties due to dysgraphia, visual immaturities, poor coordination or underdeveloped fine motor skills, poor spatial awareness or retained primitive reflexes. Dysgraphia causes aren’t entirely clear but it is a condition that results in difficulty with spelling, arranging letters and words on a page as well as organising information stored in short and long term memory.

Does my child have a writing problem or dysgraphia?

Writing problems can manifest in many different ways including: mirror writing, difficulties putting thoughts onto paper and illegible or messy handwriting. Sometimes children may have an aversion to writing on paper as they may have difficulty with comprehension or language and find putting thoughts on paper a challenging task. Other children may have difficulty focusing on the paper due to visual processing immaturities or may have not developed correct pen grip due to retained primitive reflexes.

How can Learning Connections help with writing problems and dysgraphia?

Writing difficulties can stem from one or a range of different problems that a child may be experiencing. If a child is having difficulty with spatial awareness or has visual processing problems, writing words on a page can be a very difficult practice for them. Similarly, if a child is having difficulty with correct pen grip, their writing will often be uncontrolled and illegible. In both of these examples, the child may have these difficulties as a result of retained primitive reflexes.

Whatever the underlying cause of the problem is, Learning Connections can help. Our holistic approach helps children to develop the correct cognitive foundation that will assist them in overcoming any learning difficulties that they may have. Learning Connections performs an extensive assessment of your child in a friendly, one-on-one setting to determine the underlying causes of their writing problems, as well as any other difficulties they may be having.

When we have identified the particular developmental immaturities your child is experiencing, we then provide you with a customised, home-based program that is unique to your child. The program is specifically designed to strengthen the areas your child has most difficulty with and includes not only activities, but also dietary advice.

You are free to contact us with any questions you have about implementation of the program and we will check back and monitor your child’s progress approximately two months from our initial consultation.

If you would like more information about how we can help your child with their writing difficulties or any other problems they may be having, please call or email us.
