    What are Speech Delays?

As toddlers begin to speak, we are used to hearing incorrect sound formation as they learn new words and more difficult sounds. Some children however, have difficulty moving past this stage into correct sound and word formation. It can be difficult to know when and if your child will 'grow out of' this idiosyncrasy and many parents can find this uncertainty stressful.

At Learning Connections we see children with speech difficulties and often find there can be a range of causes of this problem. For example, some children have difficulty feeling exactly where their tongue and lips are as they have not had enough sensory input through a range of different food textures when eating while others have difficulty speaking due to auditory problems.

    What is developmental Apraxia?

Developmental Apraxia is also known as childhood apraxia of speech. The condition is a motor speech disorder meaning that children have difficulty controlling the muscles needed for correct speech sounds – this is not due to muscle weakness but due to lack of neural pathways from the brain to these muscles. Learning Connections' programs are effective for forming these neural pathways.

Does my child have a speech delay?

Children with speech problems can present with a variation of symptoms including:

    • Poor pronunciation and articulation
    • Aversion to certain food textures
    • Speech impediments such as a stutter or lisp
    • Auditory difficulties
    • Difficulties with phonics
    • Difficulties following directions
    • Skipping words
    • Difficulty stringing words together in a sentence

How Learning Connections helps children with speech difficulties

Speech delays in many children are often due to neurological immaturities. Rather than speech therapy, Learning Connections performs an extensive assessment of your child in a friendly, one-on-one setting to determine the underlying factors that may be contributing to their speech problems. When we have identified the particular developmental immaturities your child is experiencing, we then provide you with a customised home program that is unique to your child.

The program is specifically designed to strengthen the areas your child has most difficulty with and includes not only activities, but also dietary advice. Learning Connections can also work in conjunction with children undertaking speech pathology and often our holistic treatment improves the outcomes of speech therapy. Sometimes children have been undertaking speech pathology for months or even years to no avail, but once undertaking our program, their speech therapy begins to work much faster.

You are free to contact us with any questions you have about implementation of the program and we will check back and monitor your child’s progress approximately two months from our initial consultation.

If you would like more information about how we can help your child with their speech difficulties or any other problems they may be having, please call or email us.
