What are reading problems and dyslexia?

Reading difficulties are typically characterised by a child’s difficulty with reading, comprehension, tracking and often spelling. Reading problems are not always caused by one issue but can have many and varied contributing factors. For example, some children may experience reading difficulties due to vision problems or visual immaturities, auditory processing difficulties, attention difficulties or memory problems. Dyslexia is another common cause of reading problems and it is estimated that approximately 10% of the Australian population is affected by it.

Dyslexia in children has a wide array of symptoms and while reading is primarily affected, writing and even speaking can also be impaired. Dyslexia symptoms include difficulty recognising letters and matching them to their corresponding sounds as well as interrupted flow of information to the brain by focusing too hard on the letters in the words.

Does my child have a reading problem?

Children with reading difficulties may be experiencing one or several of the following:

    • Poor auditory analysis skills – difficulties with phonics (distinguishing speech sounds)
    • Visual processing immaturities – leading to difficulties focusing the eyes or tracking words on a page
    • Attention or memory problems – leading to difficulties with comprehension
    • Dyslexia – difficulty blending sounds, jumbling of letters etc

How can Learning Connections help with reading problems and dyslexia?

Reading problems in many children are often due to neurological immaturities. Dyslexia treatment options vary – in order to determine the underlying causes of the reading difficulties your child may be having, Learning Connections performs an extensive assessment in a friendly, one-on-one setting. Once we have identified the particular developmental immaturities your child is experiencing, we then provide you with a customised home-based program that is unique to your child. The program is specifically designed to strengthen the areas your child has most difficulty with and includes not only activities, but also dietary advice.

    Visual Activities

Many children have signs of visual processing immaturities. They may be reluctant to draw and engage in paper-pencil activities in their Prep year. When older, they may miss words and lines when reading. Visualisation activities, when used in conjunction with a Learning Connections program help children improve visual attention and learning. These can be included in a Learning Connections program.

You are free to contact us with any questions you have about implementation of the program and we will check back and monitor your child’s progress approximately two months from our initial consultation

If you would like more information about how we can help your child with their reading difficulties or any other problems they may be having, please call or email us.
