What services does Learning Connections Centre provide?

Learning Connections provides individual assessments for children experiencing learning difficulties, attention disorders, behavioural problems and developmental delays. A home-based therapy program is tailor-made specifically to your child's needs based upon evaluation of their learning style, strengths, weaknesses and their neurological profile. Support and reassessment visits are performed on a regular basis as required.

What is a Learning Connections assessment?

An assessment at Learning Connections varies and is dependent upon the age of the child and the difficulties the child initially presents with. Areas evaluated include reflex development, visual and auditory processing, perceptual skills, eye function skills, motor development (including cerebellar-vestibular function), nutritional status and academic levels as appropriate.

Included in the first appointment is a parent or carer consultation and instruction on the child's home based program. The initial assessment takes approximately three hours.

What might a Learning Connections home based program involve and how long does it take?

A Learning Connections Program will include physical exercises, learning strategies and dietary advice specific to your child's needs. The program will usually involve around 20-25 minutes of activities daily. Check Back visits are at approximately two monthly intervals and take around 1 hour. The majority of children will have between one and three check back visits.

How soon could we expect to see results?

Some children improve very quickly, usually in concentration, behaviour and co-ordination. Most children begin to show some academic improvement after about 4 weeks of their Learning Connections Program. This improvement is maintained by follow up visits and program changes. A small group of children improve more slowly and may take longer.

What if my child has already had speech therapy, occupational therapy or a similar program – how is Learning Connections different?

These programs can be highly beneficial and many children who seek our help have previously been involved in excellent programs; however, they are still having difficulty as these programs have not fully addressed the underlying causes of their issues. If the child’s problem is only speech, then speech therapy will be all that is needed; if it is just a reading problem, then learning support will suffice; if it is a visual difficulty, eye training will remedy the problem; however this approach will not work if the child is suffering from several issues.

A compartmentalised approach does not address all aspects of the child’s problems. Prioritising interventions is paramount to effectively treating the problem. Like stacking blocks, Learning Connections needs to start at the base of the problem.

Unlike tutoring and remedial programs, Learning Connections does not give children more of what they cannot do. Learning Connections finds the cause of the child’s difficulties and treats it effectively.

Do Educators support Learning Connections methods?

Increasing numbers of teachers from both private and state schools are attending Learning Connections' teacher training programs. In the last five years alone, over 2000 teachers from schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Dubai, Qatar, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK have attended workshops and now use Learning Connections Programs with their classes each day. They collect research on its effectiveness and regularly refer children to Learning Connections.

Is tutoring part of Learning Connections approach?

We do not provide tutoring programs as we focus on improving children’s learning through treating the underlying cause of their learning difficulties. For many children who have difficulty with concentration and immaturities in the way they process information, tutoring alone may be giving them more of what they cannot do.

Learning Connections uses specific, age appropriate learning strategies once a child’s immaturities and difficulties have been addressed through our programs. When these immaturities are addressed the child is then able to benefit more fully from existing school based learning and tutoring programs.

Does anyone else use Learning Connections' methods?

No. Learning Connections is unique in its methods; our holistic approach, multiple strategies and prioritising of treatments is helping children make the most of children’s lives by improving their ability to learn.
