  • What is Dance for Learning?

Dance for Learning incorporates developmental movement patterns that children naturally progress through in their first year of life. Babies do these movements on their back, sides and tummies on the floor. These actions help their neurological and sensory nervous systems to develop, and repeating these movement patterns at any age is beneficial in reorganising the central nervous system.

The central nervous system relies on developmental movement patterns to create the foundation for life-long learning. If children miss out on properly experiencing and moving through these crucial developmental patterns as they are growing, it may lead to gaps in their neurological development. These gaps may not be apparent at first, but often manifest as learning difficulties or behavioural problems later in life as a result of this poor neurological development. These developmental immaturities can lead to behavioural disorders, memory problems, speech delay or difficulties, sleep disorders, coordination problems, auditory problems and other difficulties.

Dance for Learning activities are specially designed to mimic the developmental movement patterns that children need for their neurological development. Incorporating these movements into a dance class is a fun way to help children’s central nervous systems. The dance classes help children to better develop:

    • Motor skills
    • Proprioception
    • Balance and coordination
    • Eye-tracking
    • Sensory integration
    • Attention and Memory

The activities of Dance for Learning encourage neurological re-patterning which helps to coordinate all parts of the brain and body to improve emotional, social and cognitive wellbeing.
