  • Our History

    Learning Connections was established in Brisbane in 1976. Originally called ANSUA (A New Start for the Under Achiever), the Learning Connections Centre was established to assist children with learning difficulties, attention disorders, developmental delays and behavioural problems through innovative neurological programs.

    The centre first began when a teacher, Jean Rigby, had a child who was struggling with learning. Jean travelled the world with her husband (an academic) and in her travels she had access to the most recent research on children’s development and learning at international universities. She began learning about innovative neurological programs that assist children with learning difficulties and developmental delays.

    These programs were a 'lightbulb' moment for Jean as she saw the potential for implementation and how they could help children experiencing immaturities in their neurological development. Using these neurological and motor sensory theories, Jean found that these techniques aided her son with the learning difficulties he was experiencing.

    She co-founded ANSUA as she wanted to help other children who were struggling as her own son had been. Jean became the director of what is now known as Learning Connections in 1976 and in 1998 Maureen Hawke became director of the centre. Maureen has extensive knowledge in children's development with a background in paediatric nursing and she is still the head of our organisation with her decades of knowledge in children's development.

    Beyond our beginnings

    Learning Connections has come a long way since the early days of ANSUA. We have grown from focusing just on children with learning difficulties, to now helping enhance all aspects of children’s development – allowing them to achieve their best in all aspects of their lives.

    Backed by research and enhanced by decades of experience, the Learning Connections team can help children to reach their full potential.

    We are truly passionate about ensuring that every child is given the keys to their own future success. We provide children with the support they need to achieve the best they can achieve – not only academically but alsophysically, socially and emotionally.

    Over the decades we have helped tens of thousands of families around Australia to achieve their best possible learning and behavioural outcomes – and we continue to do so, each and every day.
